Cold email tools, or a LinkedIn network that knows you

Cold email goes to people who have never heard of you, and most of it gets ignored. You're choosing between sending more of it and building a LinkedIn network that already knows your name.

Short answer

Cold email tools are software you run yourself. Instantly, Smartlead and Lemlist send email to strangers at volume, and you write the copy and build the list. ExpertGen is an agency that fills your LinkedIn network with your buyers, posts in your voice, then messages the ones who accept or react. Pick a tool if you need reach this week. Pick ExpertGen if you want your buyers to know your name first.

What cold email tools are

A cold email tool is software you rent by the month. You load a list of addresses, write the message, connect the inboxes you want to send from, and the tool does the sending. It spaces the sends out over the day, tracks opens and replies, and stops the sequence when someone writes back. Instantly.ai, Smartlead and Lemlist are three of the common ones.

Their published prices sit close together. Instantly lists outreach plans at $47 a month for Growth, $97 for Hypergrowth and $358 for Lightspeed. Smartlead lists Base at $39 a month, Pro at $94, and its two top plans at $174 and $379. Lemlist lists an Email plan at $55 a month billed yearly, or $69 month to month, and a Multichannel plan at $87 per user a month billed yearly, or $109 month to month.

The software is one line of the real cost. You also need domains and inboxes to send from, time to warm them, a list of people worth writing to, and someone to write the emails and answer what comes back. Most teams either do that work themselves or pay a person to do it.

What cold email tools do well

Cold email is fast, and it reaches a lot of people at once. A small team can go from nothing to a few thousand emails in a week. If you need conversations this month and you already have a list, cold email is the quickest way to get them. The plans start at $39 a month, so the software itself is rarely the thing that stops you.

They're also easy to control. You own the account, so you can change the copy today, run two subject lines against each other, and stop whenever you want. Reply rates get argued about, and the public numbers don't agree. Instantly's own 2026 benchmark report puts the average reply rate at 3.43 percent. Belkins, using a stricter method, reports 0.45 percent for 2025. The two count different things, so read both as rough.

Where cold email tools stop

The tool does the sending, and that's where it ends. It doesn't decide who gets the email, and it can't make the reader know your name. That work stays with you.

What ExpertGen does instead

ExpertGen is a LinkedIn scaling agency in Portland, Oregon, and we work one channel. We start with the network instead of the message, because people reply to names they already know. We build your LinkedIn network out of your exact buyers, picked by title, company size and industry, and you approve that list before anything goes out. Then 600 connection requests a month go out from your own profile, which is 20 a day.

Next we make your name familiar. We publish 12 posts a month on your profile, written in your voice. The words come from you. You do one 45 minute voice call to start, then one 10 minute voice memo each week, and we turn that memo into the week's posts. That's our answer to the most common complaint about LinkedIn writing services, which is that the posts sound like a machine wrote them. Setup also includes a rewrite of your profile so it reads for buyers.

Messages only go to people who accepted a connection request or reacted to a post. From week 3, each of those buyers gets a short message in your voice, and we send three at most. You take the call with anyone who replies. Every week you get a scoreboard with buyers added, buyers reacting, messages sent, replies and calls. We report buyers reacting instead of connection counts, because more connections doesn't mean more reach. LinkedIn's feed decides what gets shown.

We build the network first because of what it does to reply rates. Across campaigns we've run, messages sent to a sender's own first degree network of buyers got 11 to 28 replies per 100, and five of those campaigns came in at 27.7, 23.4, 21.7, 11.9 and 11.0. The same kind of message to strangers got about 1 reply per 100. Our cold email averaged 1.09 replies per 100 on the first email across 195,635 emails, and LinkedIn messages to strangers got 0.8 per 100. We don't promise you a number of leads or calls. You see the real numbers on a scoreboard every week. This works for companies that sell to other businesses, when those buyers are on LinkedIn. It takes weeks to build, and it needs 10 minutes of your voice a week.

Who should pick which

Pick cold email tools if

  • You need conversations this month and you already have a list.
  • You have someone to write the emails and answer the replies.
  • Your buyers are not on LinkedIn, or they never open it.

Pick ExpertGen if

  • You sell to other businesses and your buyers are on LinkedIn.
  • You can give 10 minutes of voice a week and wait a few weeks.
  • You'd rather message 600 buyers who know your name than 6,000 who don't.

What it costs, side by side

On published prices the software is cheap. Instantly runs $47 to $358 a month. Smartlead runs $39 to $379 a month. Lemlist starts at $55 a month billed yearly, or $69 month to month. What those numbers leave out is the rest of the job. Add domains and inboxes, the weeks of warming, the list, a writer, and a person to answer replies. Those costs are yours to add up, and the software plan is only the first of them.

ExpertGen is one flat plan. The first block is 90 days, paid up front, because a network takes weeks to warm. We give you the price on the first call. That plan covers the buyer list, the connection requests, the 12 posts a month, the messages to buyers who accept or react, the profile rewrite and the weekly scoreboard. If you need calls this week, a tool is the better pick, and we'll tell you that on the call.
